The Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge’s Court on Wednesday charged former Hefazat-e-Islam joint secretary general Mamunul Huq with rape in a case filed with Sonargaon police station in Narayanganj by a woman whom he claimed to be his second wife.
Judge Anisur Rahman also set November 14 for the formal commencement of the trial through examining prosecution witnesses.
Mamunul heard the charge against him from the dock and pleaded ‘not guilty’.
The woman, mother of two children, in her case statement alleged that her husband and Mamunul were close friends and, at instigation of Mamunul, she was divorced in 2018 and then Mamunul insisted her to come to Dhaka.
She alleged that Mamunul, taking advantage of her helplessness, established physical relation assuring her of marriage.
For the last time, the woman alleged, Mamunul raped her on April 3 at Royal Resort at Sonargaon in Narayanganj.
On April 3 late afternoon, local Awami League leaders and activists cordoned the resort where Mamunul claimed that the woman with her was his second wife and later local Hefazat leaders and activists took him and the woman away by vandalising the resort.
The woman later lodged the rape case against Mamunul.
