
A 20-kilometre tailback has been created on Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge highway since early Tuesday.
Traffic jam was seen from the east side of Bangabandhu Bridge to Rabana Bypass, causing immense sufferings to the Eid-ul-Fitr holidaymakers and drivers.
The highway is witnessing huge pressure of transports and a number of people were seen travelling on trucks to go to their destinations.
According to the police and drivers, the pressure of vehicles on the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge highway was created as 12 vehicles were not moveable on the highway due to minor accidents and mechanical glitches.
Elenga Highway Police Outpost in-charge, Sajedur Rahman, said on early Tuesday that the traffic congestion was caused due to the increased pressure of vehicles and mechanical glitches of a few vehicles at various points on the highway.
He said that policemen were working to ease the traffic jam and hoped that the traffic movement would become normal with the progress of the day.
Enamul Kabir, driver of a Bogura-bound microbus at the Bikramhati CNG station under Tangail Sadar Upazila, said that he had started from the airport area in Dhaka at about 1:00am on and that he had to face traffic jam repeatedly on his way.
He said that he needed eight hours to reach Tangail due to the traffic jam.
Local residents confirmed that vehicles were seen to remain standstill on the roads for hours early in the morning.
