The police on Tuesday arrested two people including an activist of Juba League, youth wing of the ruling Awami League, on charges of abducting and beating a chairman candidate in the upcoming Singra upazila parishad election in Natore on Monday.

The arrestees are JL activists Nazmul Haque Babu and Sumon Ahmed, said Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Natore Sadar Police Station.

Mizanur told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Mojibur Rahman, elder brother of the injured chairman candidate Delowar Hossain, filed a case with the police station on Monday night accusing 22-23 unnamed persons over the abduction and torture.

He said that by reviewing the CCTV footage, they had identified the people who were involved in abducting Delowar Hossain and were trying to arrest them.

However, the police official did not want to disclose the names of them for the sake of investigation.

Meanwhile, Delowar Hossain was shifted to the general ward from the Intensive Care Unit of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital at around 2:00pm after he regained consciousness about sixteen hours later.

Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal, in-charge of RMCH ICU, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Delowar was kept in life support at the ICU on Monday night. ‘However, we have shifted him to the ward as he regained his consciousness on Tuesday noon’, he added.

Earlier, a group of youths forcibly picked up Delowar in a black microbus in front of the Natore district election office when he went to meet with the returning officer after submitting his nomination paper for the chairman post in the Singra upazila parishad election.

Minutes after his abduction, Delowar told reporters that the followers of his rival candidate Lutfor Habib, joint-secretary of the Singra upazila Awami League, and brother-in-law of state minister for ICT Division Zunaid Ahmed Palak, abducted his two elder brothers in the morning and held them hostage so that he could not submit his nomination papers.

Meanwhile, this correspondent obtained the CCTV footage where several Juba League, Swechchhasebak League, and Sramik League leaders and activists, close to Lutfor Habib, were seen picking up Delowar Hossain in a black microbus forcibly.

Wising anonymity, several local journalists and Awami League leaders told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they had identified Singra upazila Swechchhasebak League general secretary Mohon Ali and member Anwar Hossain, Sherkol Union Juba League former president Sanwar Hossain, incumbent president Setu Sarkar and general secretary Majnu Talukder, Kalam Union Juba League general secretary Nazmul Hossain, Singra Motor Workers Union former general secretary Abdus Sattar, Lutful Habib’s personal assistant Zahid Hasan and driver Sujon, Singra upazila Sramik League general secretary Swapan’s brother Sorol, and Juba League activist Piyas and Nazmul Haque Babu by reviewing the CCTV footage of the abduction of Delowar Hossain.

However, Lutful Habib denied the allegation of abducting and beating Delowar. When asked about the involvement of his personal assistant and driver in the abduction, Lutful Habib told this correspondent that he did not have a good relationship with his personal assistant and driver for several days due to some political reasons.

Contacted, Natore Swechchhasebak League president Ishtiaq Ahmed said that he was not aware of the party men’s involvement in abducting and beating Delowar Hossain.
