At least two youths were lynched and five others injured in village Panjapalli under Madhukhali upazila in Faridpur as local people beat them, suspecting that they had torched a makeshift Hindu temple Thursday night.

The deceased siblings, Ashraf and Arshad, were day labourers and were declared dead as they were taken to a hospital in the district town, said assistant superintendent of police (Madhukhali) Mizanur Rahman.

He said that the injured ones were also admitted to the hospital and are now undergoing treatment.

The incident began at about 7:30pm on Thursday and continued until 1:00am on Friday, he said.

Police said that the villagers saw that a woman devotee went to the Kali temple in the evening and lit a lamp.

After a while, they said, anyone set fire to the temple.

They said that locals found some youths gathering in a nearby school, where construction work was underway.

The police said that the locals suspected that the young construction workers were behind the fire and began to beat them.

‘On information, we sent additional force in the area and 11 of us were also injured,’ Mizanur said, adding, ‘we deployed additional force to keep law and order under control.’

None was arrested so far, he said, adding that a murder case would be filed in this connection.
