TWO separate probe bodies have found involvement of three activists of the ruling Awami League-backed student body Bangladesh Chhatra League in torturing a fresher of the al-fiqh and legal studies department at Islamic University in Kushtia.

The victim student was allegedly tortured at Lalon Shah Hall of the university on February 7.

The accused are Mudachsir Khan Kafi, a second-year student of physical education and sports science department, Mohammad Shagor and Uzzal Hossain, both second-year students of Islamic history and culture department of the university.

The three people are followers of IU BCL unit general secretary Nasim Ahmed Joy.

The investigation committees submitted their reports to the university administration on Monday afternoon, sources at the IU VC office said on Tuesday.

The probe bodies recommended that the university administration take proper action as per the university Act against the accused involved in the incident.

The action would be taken against the accused as per the university Act in the next student disciplinary committee meeting as the probe bodies found their involvement in torturing the fresher of the al-fiqh and legal studies department of the university, IU acting registrar HM Ali Hasan said.

According to the probe bodies, a group of Chhatra League activists led by physical education second-year student Mudachsir Khan Kafi and Islamic history and culture department second-year student Mohammad Shagor, supporters of IU BCL unit general secretary Nasim Ahmed Joy, called the victim to room 136 of Lalon Shah Hall.

They allegedly stripped off the victim and tortured him there from midnight to 4:30am on February 7.

At one point, the accused assaulted the victim with a steel rod using abusive words as he refused to perform as they ordered.

Mudachsir and Mohammad Shagor tortured the victim both physically and mentally, IU law administrator and also the member of the probe body formed by the university administration professor M Anisur Rahman said.

‘We have found the allegations of torturing the fresher of the al-fiqh and legal studies department to be true,’ he said, adding that the authorities have been recommended to punish the accused as per the university Act.

Two probe bodies, one by the university administration and another by the hall authorities, were formed to look into the matter on February 15.

On February 12, 2023, a first-year female student of the finance and banking department was tortured and intimidated by the IU Chhatra League vice-president Shanjida Chowdhury Ontora and her associates, including Tabassum, Mim, Urmi and Maobiya Jahan, at Deshratna Sheikh Hasina Hall on the campus in Kushtia.

Ontora, at one stage, forced the victim to get undressed and videoed the incident on the mobile phone.

The incident drew huge protests at Islamic University as well as other educational institutions across the country.

The university administration expelled Ontora and her four associates from the university on August 21 following a High Court order.
