Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan said on Thursday that a plan to build open jail in Bangladesh was adopted following models of those in developed countries.
The home minister came up with the disclosure while responding to Awami League lawmaker Mamunur Rashid Kiran鈥檚 question during a question and answer session of the second session of the 12th parliament that began on the day.
The question and answer session of the parliament was chaired by Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury.
The home minister said that 160 acres of land had been acquired at Ukhia upazila in Cox鈥檚 Bazar for construction of an open prison on the model of Malaysia鈥檚 Community Rehabilitation Programme.
He said that the construction of the open jail would be started soon.
In 2010, due to massive pressure of prisoners against the capacity, the Malaysian government initiated the programme, which is part of the National Blue Ocean Strategy initiative, to reduce cost against prisons building open jail on idle land.
In the jail, inmates are receiving vocational training and the chance to earn and save money from the sale of products they produce.聽聽

Recruitment of manpower to all these positions has been ensured through a transparent and corruption-free recruitment process, he said.
The minister also said that the process of inducting two sophisticated helicopters was underway to prevent criminal activities and conduct operations and transform the police into a three-dimensional force.
