A fire broke out in the Amurbunia area of Chandpai range of the Sundarbans East Zone on Saturday amid the ongoing heatwave.
Morrelganj fire station duty officer Newaj Mahmud Nahid said that a unit of firefighters rushed to the spot after hearing the news in the afternoon.
‘The firefighting team is now out of mobile network. The latest, we were informed that they were going to the spot on trawler after transferring firefighting equipment from the truck,’ he added.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
Morrelganj upazila’s Nishanbari union parishad member Abu Taher said that being informed by the local fishermen, he along with other villagers reached the spot.
He estimated that the fire spread to three kilometres of the mangrove forest.
However, the forest officers could not confirm the overall damage of forest plants immediately.
The Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest in the world, is renowned for its unique biodiversity and vital ecological significance.
Spanning across Bangladesh and India, the Sundarbans serves as a critical habitat for numerous species, including the iconic Bengal tiger.
Earlier, fires caused huge damages of the biodiversity in the forest.
