A leader of the Rohingya community was shot dead on Monday morning reportedly over establishing dominance in a camp at Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
The incident took place in the C-3 block of Rohingya Camp No. 4-Extension in the upazila.
Deceased Mohammad Elias, 43, was son of Abul Kashem of C-Block of Rohingya camp of Ukhiya 4-Extension. Elias was the Head Majhi as senior community leaders in the Rohingya camps are known.
Ukhiya police officer-in-charge Shamim Hossain said that Elias was sleeping in his house on Sunday night when early in the morning 10–15 miscreants broke the door of the house and took him away. Later, he was shot to die on the spot.
The police officer added that they primarily believe that members of terrorist organisation Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army, in short ARSA, carried out the murder in their attempt to spread dominance in the Rohingya camp. Efforts are on to arrest those involved, he said.
