The detective branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police said on Sunday that it would seek Interpol’s assistance to bring Akhtaruzzaman Shaheen, the alleged mastermind behind the murder of Jhenaidah-4 Awami League lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar, back to Bangladesh.
Shaheen reportedly fled to the United States after the murder, and an official request would be sent through the inspector general of police to bring him back, DMP DB chief Harun-or-Rashid said.
His remarks came while he was talking to journalists at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Sunday morning.
‘We have already sent a request to the IGP over the issue,’ he said.
The DB chief revealed that investigations by the detectives in both Kolkata and Dhaka confirmed Shaheen’s involvement in the murder, while the Indian police are still searching for the body of Anwarul who was believed to be killed in a New Town flat in Kolkata where he travelled on May 11 and went missing on May 14.
Harun said that he was leading a three-member team leaving Dhaka for Kolkata on Sunday morning for further investigation into the murder case.
The DB chief said that after visiting the crime scene the team would interrogate Jihad Hawladar, who was arrested in India.
About recovering Anwarul’s body, Harun told reporters that the West Bengal police and its Criminal Investigation Department are doing a lot of work and have come a long way.
‘We hope to get trace [the body] very soon,’ he said.
After reaching Kolkata, the Dhaka police team went to the Westin Hotel in New Town in the city.
The media in Kolkata reported that the delegation may visit various areas, including Sanjiba Garden and Bhangare Krishna Mati in New Town.
A Dhaka police official closely involved in Anwarul murder case told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Sunday that information about the involvement of transnational criminal gangs has also been found in this murder.
He said that gleaning information in the case had become difficult particularly because everything, from direction to planning, was implemented in a ‘cut-out’ method that kept different groups involved in this murder in dark about each other’s role.Â
Two groups were involved in Anwarul murder, he said, adding that one group laid the plan and another group implemented it.
According to the information gathered so far, Anwarul was murdered over strife to establish control over the illegal trade of gold, drug and hundi around the border belt of Jhenaidah, Chuadanga and Jashore, the police officer said.
He added that this whole affair would be brought under investigation phase by phase.
