The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Monday has granted permission to film actor Monowar Hossain Dipjol to resume his duties as the general secretary of the Bangladesh Film Artistes Association.

Chamber judge M Enayetur Rahim issued the order, staying a previous High Court directive that prohibited Dipjol from holding the office for two months.

The High Court had issued the order on May 20 following a writ petition, filed by Dipjol’s rival candidate actress Nipun Akhter, who alleged that the prior manipulated the association’s election held on May 19.

The Appellate Division stayed the High Court’s order after hearing a petition filed by Dipjol.

Dipjol’s lawyer Zainul Abedin argued before the Appellate Division that Nipun’s allegation of election manipulation was unfounded, citing her earlier acceptance of Dipjol’s victory and congratulation to him.

Zainul said that the Appellate Division’s stay order also postponed another directive from the High Court, which instructed the ministry of social welfare to investigate allegation of election manipulation by bribing voters and ousting Mahmud Koli-Nipun Akhter panel agents from the polling station by Dipjol.

In the BFAA elections, Misha Sawdagar emerged as president with 265 votes, defeating Mahmud Koli by 170 votes. Contesting for the general secretary post, Dipjol received 225 votes, while Nipun Akhter got 209 votes.

Lawyer Shah Monjurul Hoque represented Nipun Akhter in the legal proceedings.
