Mazid Sons Construction Ltd, the contractor widely known for massive corruption in the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant housing project, has been accused of stealing Rural Electrification Board’s poles and using them at Rajshahi University.

According to the university officials, the company is constructing a 10-storey Shahid AHM Kamaruzzaman Hall behind the university stadium at a cost of Tk 70.20 crore.

Witnesses said that ten electric poles were brought to the construction site of Shahid AHM Kamaruzzaman  Hall on a trolley on Tuesday to set up the power transmission line of the under-construction hall.

When the poles were being unloaded from the trolley, local contractors challenged the validity of the poles stating that they were Rural Electrification Board’s electric polls.

At one stage, the trolley driver informed the contractors that these electric poles were brought from Bogura, and left the place after unloading the poles, witnesses said.

Sujon Saha, superintending engineer of Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that on information they visited the RU campus and found that these were their polls.

‘We have informed the university authorities of the matter, and we will investigate to find out how these electric poles have come to the project area of Majid Sons Construction Ltd,’ he added.

Shahin Sawkat, supervisor of Mazid Sons Construction Ltd said that they brought the electric polls through another company and would ask the latter from where they brought the poles.

Khandaker Shahriar Rahman, director of the university physical infrastructure development project, said that they would also investigate the incident and take necessary actions in this regard.

Earlier on January 30, at least nine workers were injured when the roof of an under-construction auditorium of AHM Kamaruzzaman Hall collapsed

Earlier in May, 2019, the High Court, after hearing a writ petition, asked the government to probe abnormally high prices of household articles purchased to furnish apartments in multi-storey buildings under the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Project in Pabna.

Referring to reports carried by different dailies, the petition stated that the public works department purchased the household articles, including electric stoves, electric kettles, room cleaners, television sets, refrigerators, pillows and washing machines, for furnishing 966 apartments constructed mainly for Russian engineers and officials of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Project.

Each of the pillows was reportedly purchased for Tk 5,957 and lifted to the apartments at a cost of Tk 760, among others, according to the petition.

The same company provided the supplies at abnormally high prices.
