Bangladesh has been elected the chairperson of the governing council of Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific for the next two years.

The country achieved the post in the 24th meeting of the governing council of CIRDAP held in Bangkok on Thursday, said a press release.


Local government, rural development and cooperatives minister Md Tazul Islam presided over the council meeting. He is accompanied by Mosammat Shahanara Khatun, secretary of the rural development and cooperatives division, said a press release.

The executive committee meeting was held from June 4 to June 5 in which the secretary of RDCD participated and acted as vice-chair of the meeting. In the meetings, the member countries reviewed the centre鈥檚 performance and discussed how to achieve the centre鈥檚 goal.

The representatives from member countries including Fiji, IR Iran, India, Malaysia, Nepal, Indonesia, Pakistan, Philippines, Lao PDR, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Vietnam participated in the meeting.

Besides representatives from various regional and international organisations including AARDO, ACD, ANGOC, FAO, NCDC, A2I, and NACA provided their comments as observers. The governing council appointed a new director general for the next four years.

Bangladesh was elected as the next host country for the governing council meeting of 2026.
