Independent lawmaker Suhrab Uddin on Sunday demanded five per cent tax instead of 15 per cent to legalise undisclosed money proposed in the national budget for 2024-25 fiscal.
Taking part in the general discussion on the proposed budget in the Jatiya Sangsad, the Kishoreganj-2 lawmaker demanded making it easier to legalise the undisclosed money.
In the proposed budget for the financial year 2024-25, an opportunity to legalise undisclosed money has been given for one year from next July through paying 15 per cent tax.
Similarly, buying land, flats and apartments can also be legalise by paying taxes at specific rates depending on the area. Specific tax is payable for per square metre in specific areas.
‘The dollar-crisis is taking place due to money laundering while money laundering will not stop if the undisclosed income is not given an opportunity to legalise,’ Suhrab, also a former Awami League lawmaker, said.
‘15 per cent tax is too high, it should be 5 per cent,’ he said.
