
At least 92 people were killed and 104 more injured in 95 road crashes in five days before and on the Eid-ul-Azha day across the country, said road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader on Wednesday.
Quoting a report of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority on June 13-17, he also said that, out of the road crashes, the number of crashes involving motorcycles was the highest followed by the number of crashes involving easy bikes.
Obaidul said this at a press briefing held at the Road Transport and Highways Division office in the secretariat on the day.
Muslims in Bangladesh celebrated Eid-ul-Azha on Monday.
The three-day public holiday on the occasion of Eid started on Sunday and ended on Tuesday. Rush of Eid travellers started on June 13 as the Eid vacation was followed by two-day weekend of June 14-15.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, at least seven people were killed and 15 others injured in road accidents in Chattogrm, Barishal, Dhaka city, Chuadanga and Dinajpur.  Â
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Barishal reported that one person was killed and six others were injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a microbus at Atipara area under Wazirpur upazila on Barishal-Dhaka highway on Wednesday, said Wazirpur Police Station officer-in-charge Zafar Ahmed.Â
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· Staff Correspondent in Chattogram reported that a motorcycle rider was killed and another one injured while a speedy microbus hit it at Amirabad under Lohagara upazila in Chattogram early Wednesday.Â
The deceased was M Zubair, 22, and the injured was M Masuk, 22. Both of them are residents of Lohagara upazila.
Dohazari Police Station sub-inspector Abdur Rahman said that the police recovered the motorcycle and the microbus from the spot but the drive of the microbus managed to flee the scene. Â
United News of Bangladesh reported that two friends were killed and three others injured after a car carrying them crashed into a roadside tree in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area on Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Sayem Reza Rabbi, 28, and Mohammad Russell, 30, while the injured are Ratul, 27, Sagor, 28, and Biplob, 30.
Salim Reza, the father of deceased Rabbi, said that five friends went for outing taking Ratul’s private car on Monday night.
Later, they were rescued and taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 1:30am where doctors declared Rabbi and Russell dead.
Ratul and Sagor were undergoing treatment at the DMCH and their friend Biplob was receiving treatment at another private hospital in Dhaka.
The UNB reported that two motorcyclists died and another was injured in separate road accidents in Chuadanga Sadar upazila on Tuesday.
The deceased were Raj, 18, from Madrasapara in Chuadanga municipality, and Mukul Hossain, 50, of Boaliya village under Chuadanga Sadar upazila.
Locals said there was a collision between a bus of ‘Royal Paribahan’ and a motorcycle driven by Raj in Boalmari area of the Sadar upazila around 4:45pm, leaving him dead on the spot.
Moreover, motorcyclist Mukul died in a collision between two motorcycles in Kiran Gachhi area under the Sadar upazila around 9:00pm.
In another incident, the UNB reported that an ambulance driver died and four others were injured when a bus hit the vehicle at Fulbari upazila of Dinajpur on Tuesday.
The incident happened on the Dinajpur-Gobindganj regional highway in the Vimpur area of Fulbari around 11:00am.
The deceased was Ehsan Ali, 38, a resident of Chandipur village in Hakimpur.
According to locals, the ambulance, transporting 20-year-old Setu Sarker from Saduaria village in Hakimpur, was en route to the MB Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital for treatment.
