
A Road Safety Foundation report, published on Monday, showed that daily 20.15 people were killed in road crashes between June 11 and 23 while the country people celebrated Eid-ul-Azha.
At least 262 people were killed and 543 others were injured in 251 road crashes in the 13 days, it also showed.
In the motorcycle-related crashes the highest, about 40 per cent, people were killed and comparing with the journeys during Eid-ul-Azha in 2023, this year numbers of deaths in motorcycles-related crashes increased by 13.31 per cent.
Between June 11 and 23, the loss of the human resources in these crashes cost about Tk 998.55 crore.聽
During the same period, a total of 14 people were killed and eight others injured in 18 railways accidents and 12 were killed and three others injured in seven waterways accidents, the report showed.
The report was prepared on the basis of news published in different media outlets, said a press release issued by the foundation.
Meanwhile, according to the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority between June 11 and 23 a total of 230 people were killed and 301 more were injured in 235 road crashes.
On June 19, road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader at a press conference said quoting a BRTA report that during the Eid the number of road crashes involving motorcycles was the highest followed by the number of crashes involving easy bikes.
Muslims in Bangladesh celebrated Eid-ul-Azha on June 17 and the three-day public holiday started on June 16.
The rush of Eid travellers started on June 13 as the Eid vacation was followed by two-day weekend of June 14-15.
The RSF report read that in 13 days 104 motorcyclists and their pillion riders were killed followed by 49 pedestrians, 45 transport workers and passengers of three-wheeler vehicles including auto-rickshaws, battery-run rickshaws, easy-bikes, auto-vans and legunas, 24 drivers and passengers of cars, microbuses and ambulances, 15 transport workers and illegal passengers of trucks, pickup, tractors, lorries and covered vans, 11 transport workers and passengers of buses, nine transport workers and passengers of locally made transport like nasimons, karimons, and bhatbhatis and five bicyclists.
In the motorcycle-related crashes the highest 40.9 per cent took place by losing control and the highest 47.76 per cent fatal victims aged between 18 and 35 years.聽
Among all the deceased, 44 were children.
The highest percentage, 38.64 per cent, took place on national highways and the highest percentage, 27.49 per cent, took place in the afternoon.
In Dhaka division in the highest 72 crashes the highest 67 people were killed.
The RSF report also said that most of the statistics of the crashes involving injured people were not being published in the media.聽
The foundation observed that the Road Transport Act 2018 was not being implemented properly and demanded formation and implementation of a sustainable road transport strategy.
