Two people, including a member of zilla parishad, were shot to death by a group of miscreants at Ranihati area under Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj on Thursday night.
The deceased are Chapainawabganj Zilla Parishad member and Nayalavhanga Union Awami League general secretary Abdus Salam and Harinagar High School assistant teacher Abdul Matin, said police.
Witnesses said, Abdus Salam along with others was gossiping near the houses of the Ashrayan Project in front of the Ranihati College in Shibganj upazila on Thursday evening.
At around 7:30pm, a group of miscreants suddenly exploded crude bombs and opened fire on Abdus Salam and others, leaving Salam dead on the spot and Matin bullet-injured, they said.
Mim Iftekhar Jahan, on-duty doctor at Chapainawabganj 250-bed District Hospital, said that Abdul Matin was taken to the hospital at 9:00pm. ‘Matin died due to excessive bleeding on his way to the hospital as he was shot in the head and one of his legs,’ the doctor added.
Sazzad Hossain, officer-in-charge of Shibganj Police Station, said that there had been a long standing dispute between two groups of people over establishing supremacy in Nayalavhanga area.
‘The incident might have taken place due to the previous enmity. We are investigating it,’ he added.
