Special Branch of police chief and additional inspector general Md Monirul Islam on Monday said that they had not issued any order in the Bangladesh Police Service Association statement but requested journalists to be more cautious and verify information before publishing any news regarding the law enforcement agency.
Monirul Islam, also president of the Bangladesh Police Service Association, made the remark while responding to a journalist over the BPSA’s statement that drew widespread criticism in home and aboard.
‘We, Bangladesh police and the government said several times that an organisation would not take the responsibility of any individual’s acts. But, sometimes we saw exaggerated and partial news. For example, a report claiming that one of our officials fled from the country with his family. But, he did not fled,’ said Monirul after paying tribute at the memorial sculpture built in front of the Gulshan police station in memory of the police members slain in an extremist attack on Holey Artisan Bakery eight years ago.
‘We had requested journalists to crosscheck properly not only for police but also for any news. It is up to you [journalists] whether you keep requests or not,’ Monirul added.
On June 21, the police association in a statement termed recent media reports against its retired and serving officials as ‘partial, ill motivated, sweeping and exaggerated,’ while ruling Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader alleged that the police were facing a wholesale attack.
The statement was issued amid legal actions against allegations of accumulating huge illegal wealth by former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed and his family based on media reports.
Former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia has also made headlines over allegations of amassing illegal wealth in the past month.
