A student of Rajshahi University on Thursday accused activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling Awami League, of beating him for two hours reportedly for participating in the quota reform movement.
The victim, Md Mostafa Mia, a second-year student of the social work department, lodged a written complaint with the university proctor Professor Asabul Haque demanding justice and security for his life.
In the complaint, Mostafa alleged that Farhad Khan, vice president of Syed Ameer Ali Hall BCL unit, took him to Room 230 of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall on Tuesday where the BCL activists led by the university unit president Mostafizur Rahman Babu beat and tortured him for two hours.
Mostafa said that after taking him to Room 230, Mostafizur Rahman Babu started to check his mobile phone to find out whether he was an activist of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir.
‘When Mostafizur failed to find evidence to prove that I was a Shibir activist, he started slapping and punching me in the face. He asked me why I joined the quota reform movement,’ he said.
‘After a while, five other BCL activists, including Farhad beat me. When I embraced my department senior Shamim Reza, also organising secretary of the Nawab Abdul Latif Hall BCL unit, he also pushed me back,’ he alleged.
Mostafa said that Farhad whispered into his ear that they would not stop beating him until he admitted that he was a Shibir activist.
‘The BCL activists also threatened to hand me over to the police. When I requested them to hand me over me to the police, they released me after two hours,’ he said.
Mostafa alleged that the BCL men also kicked him out of the Gono Room of Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Hall.
He said that he had been suffering from insecurity and staying in his native village.
When contacted, Farhad Khan denied the allegation and claimed that he did not know anyone named Mostafa.
However, Mostafizur Rahman Babu could not be reached over the phone for his comment despite repeated attempts.
The university’s proctor said that he had asked three assistant proctors to verify the authenticity of the allegation.
‘Further actions will be taken if the allegation is found to be true,’ he added.
