Two women and a child were killed in landslides in Cox’s Bazar sadar upazila on Thursday caused by torrential rainfall.

The victims were identified as Jamila Akter, 30, wife of Mohammad Karim of ABC Ghona area, Nazmul Hasan, 5, son of Saiful Islam of Sikdar Bazar municipality, and Laila Begum, 45, of Jilongja union, all under Cox’s Bazar sadar upazila.


The entire tourist town was submerged in water gathered from a heavy rain in the early hours of Thursday, while water entered many houses also. 

Cox’s Bazar sadar police officer-in-charge Rokibuzzaman said that heavy rains began in the town about midnight past Wednesday, and about dawn the adjacent hill caved in on the house of Saiful Islam in Sikdar Bazar area. After removing the ground, Nazmul was found fatally injured, and after being taken to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital, he was declared dead by the on-duly doctor.

The police officer also said that on early Thursday morning, Jamila Akter was sleeping in her house when the hill, at the bottom of which her house was built, collapsed and crushed her.  Neighbours rushed her to district sadar hospital where she was pronounced dead.

In a separate incident on Thursday afternoon, another woman died in a hill collapse.

The police said that Laila Begum, 45, died when a hill caved in on her house in Patabunia area of Dakshin Muhuripara village under Jilongja union in Cox’s Bazar sadar upazila.

On June 19, total 10 people—eight from the Rohingya community and two from the local community—were killed in a landslide in the Rohingya camp, and on June 20, a couple were killed in ​​Cox’s Bazar sadar upazila. On July 3, another two people were killed in Rohingya Camp No-11 in Balukhali area of Ukhia upazila in the district.
