Mobile phone users have been experiencing slow internet speed on most public university campuses, including Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Rajshahi University and Chittagong University.

Several Dhaka University students complained that they were experiencing slow internet speed when browsing social media using mobile phones since Tuesday evening and the situation did not improve.

When asked about the matter, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission chairman Md Mohiuddin Ahmed said, ‘I am outside right now and cannot hear anything over the phone.’

He then hung up the phone and did not receive any calls despite several attempts.

Authorities concerned announced the closure of Dhaka University, Chittagong University, Jahangirnagar University, Rajshahi University and Islamic University, Kushtia for an identified period on Wednesday amid the ongoing demonstrations by protesting students demanding quota reforms in the government jobs. The authorities also asked students to vacant halls.

The announcements came after at least six people were killed and scores were injured on Tuesday as students’ protests against the job quota across Bangladesh turned deadly amid attacks by the police and ruling party supporters on protesters.

Following the indefinite work abstention by public university teachers, demanding the cancellation of the universal pension scheme ‘Prattay’, academic and almost all administrative activities in public universities have been halted since July 1.
