The authorities of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur gave financial assistance to the family of deceased quota reform movement organiser Abu Sayeed on Friday.

Sayeed, 22, a 12th batch student of the English department at the university, was killed on July 16 in an hour-long clash between police, the ruling Awami League-backed student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League and quota protesters on the campus.

A group of university teachers led by proctor Shariful Islam handed over a cheque of Tk 7.5 lakh to Sayeed’s parents in their village home at Babonpur of Pirganj in the morning.

Head of Bangla department Tuhin Wadud, Teachers Association general secretary Asaduzzaman Mondol Asad and Officers Association president Firojul Islam were present at the event.

Sayeed’s father Mokbul Hossain, who is a farmer by profession, said, ‘Abu Sayeed was his only son who pursued higher education among his nine children. He was expected to lift the family from poverty after completing his higher education.’

‘Sayeed managed his education expenses by doing private tuition and used to help the family by saving money from his income. It is extremely difficult for a father to bear the dead body of his child,’ he said.

He also said that the vice-chancellor talked to him over the phone and inquired about the family.

‘I requested him to give a job to a member of our family at the university and he assured me,’ said Mokbul Hossain.

Proctor Shariful Islam said, ‘The university administration always kept in touch with the parents of Abu Sayeed as per instruction of the vice-chancellor, professor Md Hasibur Rashid.’

‘The vice-chancellor promised to stand by the family. As part of the commitment, we, on behalf of the university, gave a cheque of Tk 7.5 lakh to the family and the assistance will continue,’ he said.
