
Mobile internet users across Bangladesh said on Friday that they could not access social media platforms Facebook and Telegram for seven hours between 12.00pm and 7.00pm amid the ongoing student protests seeking justice for recent killings.
An official from a state-owned telecom operator, Teletalk, said that the operator did not get any direction from the government to block social media platforms.
Leading mobile phone operator Grameenphone said in a statement that the authorities had ordered restrictions on the use of some applications through the mobile internet.
‘Considering the ongoing situation, authorities have restricted the use of some applications through mobile internet. We are in constant communications with the authorities in this regard,’ it said.
Banglalink acknowledged that some applications were temporarily closed but did not elaborate. Â
Contacted, another telecom operator, Robi Axiata, declined to comment on the matter.
State minister for posts, telecommunications, and information technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the government did not order fresh restrictions on any social media platforms.
The government lifted restrictions on social media platforms such as Facebook, TikTok on July 31 after keeping them blocked for about two weeks amid violent student protests.
Broadband connections and mobile internet services were shut down in the country between July 18 and 24, amid protests that left over 200 people killed.
The broadband connection was restored countrywide on July 24 and mobile internet services were restored on July 28.
