Home of education minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury came under attack in the port city on Saturday evening during the ongoing student protests demanding justice for killings of people and students as well as an end to harassment and arrests of protesters.
Besides, home of Rezaul Karim, Chattogram City Corporation mayor, also came under attack in the Bohadderhat area as a protest procession reached the area marching through the WASA intersection and Sholoshahar gate 2.
Later, in the port city houses of main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders also came under attack allegedly by the ruling Awami League activists.
The attacks took place after protesters brought out a procession in the city after their demonstration at the New Market interstation in the afternoon.
M Aziz Tarek, additional deputy commissioner of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police confirmed the news to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· of the attacks on the houses of the education minister and the mayor.
He said, ‘Some protesters had vandalised homes of the minister and the mayor.’
On information, the police rushed to the spot and tried to control the situation by firing sound grenades, he added.
Thousands of people from all communities has gathered at New market intersection shouting slogan ‘step down Hasina’ while no members of law enforcement agencies were present during the protest on Saturday.
After two and half hours demonstration they marched to Tigerpass intersection and marched through the city.
The protestors also vandalized a police box, a vehicle and set fire to some plastic chairs on the road during their procession.
M Mustafa Kamal, assistant personal secretary to the CCC mayor confirmed the news of the attack on the mayor’s house.
He said there was police protection in front of the mayor’s house.
When protestors tried to attack his home police fired tear shells and sound grenades to disperse the procession.
Chattra League and Juba League activists, meanwhile, allegedly attacked houses of BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, former Chattogram city unit BNP president Shahadat Hossain and city unit BNP leader Ershad Ullah at about 9:00pm at Mehedibagh area.
Rafi, son of Amir Khasru brother has confirmed the news.
Shahadat also confirmed the incidents of attacks on his social media page.
The education minister could not be reached for his comment despite repeated attempts over the phone.
