The government on Sunday declared a three-day general holiday across the country from today and extended the ongoing curfew for an indefinite period from Sunday 6:00pm.

The announcements were made in the wake of violent clashes on Sunday among protesters, members of law-enforcement agencies and members of ruling party and its associate organisations on the first day of the non-cooperation movement announced by the leaders of the Student Movement against Discrimination, demanding the resignation of the Sheikh Hasina-led government.

All the proceedings of the Appellate Division and High Court Division of the Supreme Court will remain closed for an indefinite period from today.

The Supreme Court administration issued separate notifications on Sunday saying that the legal and official proceedings of the Appellate Division, HC Division, lower courts, and tribunals would remain closed until further order.

The chief justice would, however, take necessary measures for urgent matters during the closure.

The chief justice would also pass the order to conduct trial proceedings by forming emergency benches at the High Court at any time for urgent matters, said the notifications.

The chief justice would order any lower courts or tribunals to conduct trial proceedings at any time for urgent matters, said a notice.

One or more magistrates at the chief judicial magistrate courts or chief metropolitan magistrate courts would be in charge all the time as per the constitutional obligation, said one of the notices.

At least 91 people were killed in clashes in different districts, including Dhaka, Feni, Narsingdi, Bogura, Jaipurhat, Sylhet, Cumilla, Rangpur, Kishoreganj, Sirajganj, Pabna, Munshiganj and Magura on the day.

Public administration ministry public relations officer Abdullah Shibly Sadiq said on Sunday that the government declared a three-day public holiday across the country for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Earlier, the government announced a three-day general holiday in July 21–23 for ensuring public safety amid the ongoing student protests across the country.

The home ministry on Sunday also extended the ongoing curfew for an indefinite period in Dhaka, all divisional cities, district towns, upazila towns, city corporation areas, municipal areas and industrial areas from 6:00pm on Sunday.

Earlier on July 20, the government imposed a curfew across the country for an indefinite period with breaks during the day and also deployed military amid country-wide violence centring on the student movement.

The protesting students at a rally attended by thousands at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital on Saturday declared its one-point demand for the resignation of the government, shifting from their earlier position of a nine-point charter of demands seeking justice for victims of the quota reform movement that left over 300 killed in July and this month.

They also rejected a call for dialogue from prime minister Sheikh Hasina earlier in the day.
