
The vice-chancellors of Rajshahi University and Islamic University in Kushtia resigned from their posts on Thursday after the students issued ultimatums.
Twenty-eight senior RU and 13 senior Dhaka University officials also resigned on the day.
With these, vice-chancellors of four public universities resigned from their posts after former prime minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her post on August 5 amid student protests.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Rajshahi reported that at least 29 top RU officials, including the vice-chancellor professor Golam Shabbir Sattar, resigned from their posts on Thursday.
They stepped down from their posts hours after student leaders of the Student Movement Against Discrimination had issued an ultimatum on Thursday noon urging the university top officials including the vice chancellor and pro-vice-chancellors to resign within the next 24 hours.
The leaders asked them for apology for their roles during the protests terming them as ‘Razakars and Al-Badrs’.
‘Professor Golam Sabbir Sattar submitted his resignation letter to president Mohammed Shahabuddin at 3:00pm on Thursday,’ said Mir Shahjahan Ali Zakir, secretary of RU vice-chancellor office.
RU acting registrar professor Tariqul Islam said that 28 officials including proctor professor Asabul Haque and 11 assistant proctors, student adviser professor Jahangir Alam Saud, and public relations office administrator professor Pranab Kumar Panday, also submitted their resignation letters to him till Thursday afternoon.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Kushtia reported that Islamic University in Kushtia’s vice-chancellor professor Shaikh Abdus Salam, pro-vice-chancellor professor M Mahbubur Rahman and treasurer professor M Alamgir Hossain, resigned from their posts on Thursday.
The university acting registrar, HM Ali Hasan, confirmed the news.
Professor Shaikh Abdus could not be reached over the phone despite repeated attempts for his comment.
He stepped down from his post after student leaders of the Student Movement Against Discrimination had issued an ultimatum on Thursday noon urging the university top officials, including the vice-chancellor and pro-vice-chancellors to resign within next 24 hours.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent at Dhaka University, meanwhile, reported that on Thursday 13 out of 14-member proctorial body resigned.
DU proctor professor Md Maksudur Rahman, who also resigned, confirmed the news.
He said that one of the proctorial body members was on leave and for that reason the member did not resign on the day.
The resignation came after student leaders of the Student Movement Against Discrimination had issued an ultimatum on Thursday morning urging the university top officials, including the vice-chancellor, pro-vice-chancellors, proctor, treasurer, provosts and others to resign by Friday 11:00am.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Chattogram reported that the students of Chittagong University in the morning demanded the resignation of the vice-chancellor and all members of the proctorial body but later they backed down from the demand.
On Wednesday, Jahangirnagar University vice-chancellor professor Nurul Alam and registrar Abu Hasan resigned from their posts.
Dhaka City College principal professor Bedar Uddin Ahmed also resigned from his post on the day.
Earlier on Tuesday, professor Alamgir Kabir quit from the posts of JU proctor and provost of the university’s Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Hall.
The vice-chancellor of Maulana Bhashani Science and Technology University professor Md Farhad Hossain and five other senior officials resigned from their posts on the night of August 5.
