Four High Court judges were on Monday elevated to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court clearing the way for the newly appointed chief justice to hold proceedings in the Appellate Division from today.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, Justice Syed Md Ziaul Karim, Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice SM Emdadul Hoque as judges to the Appellate Division and the appointment would come into effective after their swearing in office, according to a notification issued by the law ministry.

Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury was appointed to the High Court on August 27, 2005 while Justice Syed Md Ziaul Karim, Justice Rezaul Haque and Justice SM Emdadul Hoque were appointed as High Court judge on August 23, 2006.

The appointment came two days after High Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed was appointed as chief justice of Bangladesh following the resignation of chief justice Obaidul Hassan and five other judges of the Appellate Division amid student protests on allegation of an attempted judicial coup.

The Appellate Division and the High Court Division remained closed since fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government on August 5 in the wake of students’ mass uprising against discrimination.

Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam, who was appointed on August 27, 2005, however, did not resign as an Appellate Division judge.

With the appointment, the number of the Appellate Division judges reached to six including the chief justice.
