The government on Thursday cancelled the contract with the long-serving Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority managing director Taqsem A Khan.

Additional secretary of local government division Md Mahmudul Hasan said that the interim government cancelled the contact of Taqsem  for the public interest.

Taqsem was appointed Dhaka WASA managing director in October 2009 and his tenure was extended seven times. His tenure was last extended on October 14, 2023 for three years.

Earlier, the managing director’s staff officer Badrul Alam claimed that Taqsem submitted his resignation virtually on Wednesday night.

Dhaka WASA deputy managing director AKM Shahid Uddin was given the charge of MD.

Taqsem was accused of corruption and irregularities numerous times.

Dhaka WASA officials said that Shahid was a close associate of Taqsem.

Soon after the government cancelled the contract, a group of people under the banner of Safe Water from WASA demonstrated in front of the Dhaka WASA office.

One of the protesters, Mizanur Rahman, said that cancellation of contract was not enough for him.

‘The government must arrest Taqsem and probe all the allegations of corruptions against him,’ said Mizan.

He said that if the government did not take further action immediately, they would take to the streets.

Following the fall of Hasina’s government, Dhaka WASA employees also staged protests demanding Taqsem’s immediate resignation and arrest.

Since Sheikh Hasina’s resignation on August 5, Taqsem did not attend his office.
