The Dhaka Metropolitan Police have suspended Shahbagh police station inspector (operations) Arshad Hossain, who was photographed gagging a student protester during a demonstration on July 31.

The DMP commissioner Md Mainul Hasan ordered the suspension on Sunday, stating Arshad’s unprofessional conduct as the reason.

The order stated that despite being a member of a well-disciplined police force, Arshad’s unprofessional actions had tarnished the image of the police.

His action created a negative perception about the police activities among the people of the country, the order said.

The incident occurred during the Student Movement Against Discrimination’s ‘March for Justice’ programme, where Arshad was pictured gagging Nahidul Islam, a political science student of the New Model Degree College in Dhaka.
