The divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners and upazila nirbahi officers have got the responsibility for the chairman post of governing bodies in all non-government educational institutions under the education ministry across the country.

A press release, issued by the ministry on Tuesday, also said that the decision was taken against the backdrop of the current situation and it would be in effect until further notice.

Currently, as per the Non- Government Educational Institutions’ Governing Body and Managing Committee Rules 2024, any local level representative, any first-class government official, any retired first-class government official, any social worker or any educationist can be selected as the chairman of this body.

After Sheikh Hasina resigned as the prime minister and fled to India on August 5 following a mass uprising led by students, many people holding chairman posts in different non-government educational institutions went into hiding.

It was alleged that these people were followers of the Bangladesh Awami League.

The Tuesday release read that under the present circumstances following the Non-Government Educational Institutions’ Governing Body and Managing Committee Rules 2024’s Section 68 some directives were given.

At the district level the deputy commissioner or any representative selected by the deputy commissioner, at the upazila level the upazila nirbahi officer or any representative selected by the UNO and in the metropolitan area the divisional commissioner or any representative selected by the divisional commissioner have been given the responsibility for the chairman post in the non-government educational institutions’ governing bodies, it continues.

They will fulfil the duty until further order, it concludes.

The release was signed by the Secondary and Higher Education Division senior assistant secretary Mohammad Tawhidul Islam.
