
More students in the country go to Qoumi madrassahs than to the government-registered Aliya madrassahs, the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics reports.
Among the Qoumi madrassah students, the number of male students is higher while in most other categories of educational institutions the number of female students is higher.
Qoumi madrassah students are the highest in Mymensingh division and the lowest in Rajshahi division.
These statistics were revealed in the Socio-Economic and Demographic Survey 2023 Report released on July 15 on the bureau鈥檚 website.
The Bangladesh Madrassah Education Board at present has registered under it total 9,284 government and private Aliya madrassahs of different levels鈥擠akhil, Alim, Fazil and Kameel.
The Bangladesh Bureau of Educational Information and Statistics, under the education ministry, has no statistics on the number of Qoumi madrassahs or their students.
The Qoumi madrassahs are not registered with any government bodies.
The statistical bureau conducted the latest survey between May 21 and June 22 in 2023.
Earlier surveys were conducted in 2011 and 2004.
According to the 2023 survey report, the highest 45.84 per cent of the students aged three years and above in the country are studying in government/autonomous educational institutions, 29.99 per cent in non-government educational institutions under monthly payment order system, 10.31 per cent in non-government educational institutions not under monthly payment order system, 5.85 per cent in government Aliya madrassahs and 6.61 per cent in Qoumi madrassahs.
Of the total students in the country based on gender, Qoumi madrassahs cover 7.77 per cent male students and 5.37 per cent female ones.
According to the report, the highest 13.99 per cent of Qoumi madrassah students are in Mymensingh division followed by 8.82 per cent in Chattogram division, 7.82 per cent in Sylhet, 6.26 per cent in Dhaka, 4.93 per cent in Barishal, 4.12 per cent Rangpur, 3.87 per cent Khulna, and the lowest 3.50 per cent Rajshahi division.聽
Based on gender ratio, government/autonomous educational institutions have 46.94 per cent female and 44.82 per cent male; non-government educational institutions under monthly pay order have 30.94 per cent female and 29.11 per cent male; non-government educational institutions not under monthly pay order 10.66 per cent have male and 9.93 per cent female; non-government organisations operated educational institutions 0.90 per cent female and 0.85 per cent male; government Aliya madrassahs have 6.14 per cent male and 5.55 per cent female; and other educational institutions have 0.66 per cent male and 0.37 per cent female.
The 2023 survey report also read that among the students aged three years and above, currently 96.03 per cent are studying in the Bangla medium, 0.65 per cent in English medium, 0.30 per cent in English version, and 3.02 per cent in other forms of education.
