
Students under the platform of Student Movement Against Discrimination have been collecting relief at Dhaka University Teacher-Student Centre for the third consecutive day on Saturday to support flood-affected people.
Students needed about 50 trucks to transport the relief as the relief collection programme received huge response from people from all walks of life and the TSC premises became full with drinking water, saline, baby food, life jackets and other necessary items as relief.
The platform raised a total of Tk 1,24,48,000 from TSC fund collection booths till 5:00pm on the day.
Jannatul Kobra Urmi, a volunteer of the fund collection programme, said, ‘We received huge response from the people. Their response on Saturday is also remarkable.’
After the announcement of Abu Baker Majumder, a coordinator of the movement, students started collecting funds from Thursday following floods in eastern Bangladesh.
A concert titled ‘Joruri Songjog’ was also organised at the foot of the Raju Sculpture at the TSC for crowdfunding in support of flood victims on Friday.
The relief collection campaign, organised by leaders and activists of left-leaning student organisations, continued until midnight.
Besides, students from various departments and halls at Dhaka University are also gathering relief supplies and funds in their own ways to support the flood-affected people.
A greater part of Bangladesh including Feni, Cumilla, Noakhali, Chattogram has been inundated due to relentless rainfall and a rise in the water level of rivers following the onrush of water from upstream, leaving 20 people dead, 50 lakh affected and 3 lakh displaced in 12 districts.
