The fire that broke out at Gazi Auto Tyres Factory in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj on Sunday night was brought under control on Monday evening through 21 hours of efforts by 12 firefighting units.

Talha Bin Zasim, station officer at the fire service, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the blaze was brought under control at about 7:00pm Monday.


Earlier, family members claimed that at least 174 people who were at the factory during the looting on Sunday night were missing.

The firefighting units were working inside the factory, said fire service official Talha.

He however, said that the firefighters did not find anyone inside the factory yet as of 9:00pm on Monday.

Factory authorities claimed that none of the missing individuals were factory workers while saying that they might have come to the factory for looting.

Fire Service and Civil Defence senior staff officer Md Shahjahan Sikder told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that some relatives claimed that their family members were missing and requested fire officials to let the families know the updates.

‘We have collected their phone numbers. The families will be informed if we find someone inside the factory,’ he said, adding that ‘We still do not know whether there is anyone trapped inside as we haven’t been able to enter yet.’

As of 5:30pm Monday, 12 firefighting units were still working to control the fire that erupted at about 9:00pm on Sunday, the fire service official added.

Hundreds of people broke into the factory in Rupshi area on Sunday afternoon, hours after Gazi Group chairman and former Awami league lawmaker Golam Dastagir Gazi was arrested and later put on six-day remand.

Later, at about 9:00pm, miscreants allegedly set fire to the ground floor of the factory, triggering the massive blaze.

Fire service station officer Talha Bin Zasim said that from the spot they so far rescued 14 people all of whom were saved on Sunday.

The cause and extent of damages caused by the fire could not be known immediately, he said.
