Dhaka district additional superintendent of police Abdullahhil Kafi was detained and kept in the custody of the detective branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police for interrogation over the allegations of killing and burning students in Ashulia, on the outskirts of the capital, during the student-led mass uprising on August 5.

Detectives detained the police officer from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Monday night when he was trying to flee Bangladesh.

The metropolitan police’s joint commissioner (DB) for North, Mohammad Rabiul Hossain Bhuiyan, said on Tuesday morning that they were interrogating the additional SP over the Ashulia incident.

‘If we find his involvement in the incident, we will talk to the home adviser about arresting him. We cannot arrest a serving official without talking to the home adviser,’ he said.

Kafi was not shown arrested till writing the report at about 10:00pm, DMP additional deputy commissioner for media and public relations, Obaidur Rahman Shamim, said.

A video clip that went viral on social media showed police personnel dumping a body on several other bodies on a rickshaw van on August 5, the day when Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled to India amid a student-led mass uprising.

In the viral video, several bodies were seen piled up on a rickshaw van.

Besides, it was also seen in the video that the body was being loaded on the pile of bodies by police members in two attempts that was just like throwing sacks loaded with goods.

The bodies were later covered with a banner. At that time, some other police members were also seen walking around.
