A top listed crimes suspect Sheikh Md Aslam alias Sweden Aslam, 62, was freed from Kashimpur High Security Jail in Gazipur Tuesday evening.
Sweden Aslam, one of the 23 top crime suspects listed by the then government in 2001, was released from jail after 19 years of his captivity since he was arrested on January 31, 2005, officials said.
‘We received the papers regarding his bail on Tuesday afternoon. We freed him in the evening after scrutinising the papers,’ jailor of Kashimpur High Security Jail, Lutfor Rahman, said.
Since his arrest, he was kept in different jails and was shifted to Kashimpur High Security Jail in 2014, jail officials said.
At least 22 criminal cases, including nine for murder, were lodged with different police stations in Dhaka against him between 1986 and the time of his arrest in 2005.
Of the cases, 21 cases were settled earlier, and he was in jail in one case for murder.
The last case in which he was in jail was filed with Tejgaon police station for killing Awami League’s youth front Juba League leader Galib on March 23, 1997.
The case was filed against 20 people, including Aslam, and police submitted charge sheet before a court in Dhaka in the case on April 8, 1998.
The case is now under trial, and, so far, police could produce 14 witnesses, out of 24, before the court for examination.
Aslam secured bail in the case at around noon on Tuesday and walked out of jail in the evening on the day.
