Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman on Friday said that there was no legal obstacle for BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to participating in the forthcoming national election, as all politically motivated cases against her had been disposed of.

Speaking as the chief guest at a debate competition organised by the Debate for Democracy, Asaduzzaman warned that deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and several of her party members could be disqualified from contesting the election if they were convicted of crimes against humanity in the July-August massacre.

The attorney general emphasised that the Awami League’s participation in the next election was not crucial for ensuring participatory polls.

‘The party has no strong leadership left to compete in the election when Sheikh Hasina fled to India following her ousting as the prime minister on August 5 amid a student-led mass uprising,’ he said.

He accused the Awami League of being a fascist force responsible for undermining democracy and electoral systems to disenfranchise voters in the past three unilateral controversial national elections.

‘The Awami League’s leaders will face trials for their crimes against humanity and for destroying democracy while the heroes of the July-August revolution will be remembered as champions of democracy,’ he said.

Asaduzzaman said that the mass uprising was inspired by the spirit of the country’s independence and aimed at creating a society free of discrimination.

‘No conspiracy can undermine the achievements of this revolution. The revolutionaries remain united in their mission to secure the people’s rights,’ he said.

Presiding over a shadow parliament, Debate for Democracy chairman Hasan Ahmed Kiron demanded the arrest and trial of former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque for abolishing the caretaker government system.

The debate, held inside a hall of the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation in the capital Dhaka, saw Eastern University emerge victorious against Bangladesh University.

The adjudicators included UN migration expert SM Morshed, retired Cadet College professor Abu Mohammad Rais, ATN Bangla chief reporter Ekramul Haque Sayem, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· senior correspondent Moneruzzaman Mission and Ittefaq senior reporter Saidur Rahman.
