Sacked trainee police sub-inspectors on Sunday protested in front of the secretariat, the country’s administrative headquarters, in the capital Dhaka, demanding reinstatement of their jobs.
They formed a human chain there to press home their demand.
They alleged that 321 trainee sub-inspectors were sacked in four phases on silly allegations on the eve of their joining the police force after completing one year or more than a year training period without any payment.
‘The allegation of breaching discipline over taking breakfast is false and fabricated. We finished our breakfast in that morning. The academy sacked us on baseless allegations,’ said Munmun Akter, a sacked trainee SI of the 40th batch.
She said that they demanded that the government reinstate their jobs immediately.
‘I was a government primary school teacher. I joined the SI training on November 4, 2023 leaving my previous job. I was sacked from the training academy on the eve of my joining the police force,’ Champa Rani Das told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
Champa said that she was at a loss after losing her job.
‘If my job is not reinstated, I would have to face hardship in the coming days,’ she added.
Mohammad Rashed Khan, another sacked SI, alleged that he was dismissed from the Academy for standing casually in the field.
‘It cannot be accepted that I was sacked for my standing style,’ he added.
Starting at 10:00am, the human chain programme continued for about seven hours despite the Dhaka Metropolitan Police ban on organising any programme near the secretariat and interim government chief adviser’s office.
DMP Ramna division deputy commissioner Masud Alam said that they (the sacked trainee SIs) formed the human chain behind the secretariat.
‘We allowed them to hold the programme. But the programme lingered for many hours due to our negligence. The programme was peaceful and they did not create any chaos,’ Masud added.
A large number of police personnel were deployed at the programme venue.
Following the human chain, the sacked trainee SIs held a press conference in front of the Central Public Library in the capital.
At the press briefing, sacked SI Munmun Akter announced that they would form a human chain at the same time and the same venue today.Â
Including the eight trainee SIs sacked on January 2, a total of 321 trainee SIs out 823 were sacked for breaching discipline during various sessions of training programmes after the fall of Awami League-led autocratic regime on August 5 amid a student-led mass uprising.
On October 21, 2024, at least 252 trainee sub-inspectors, who were receiving basic training at the Bangladesh Police Academy at Sardah in Rajshahi under the 40th outside cadet batch, were discharged allegedly for breaching discipline.
They were discharged 10 days before their graduation ceremony scheduled to be held on October 31.
