
Joint forces in a drive on Sunday afternoon arrested ousted Awami League government former fisheries and livestock minister Abdul Latif Biswas at his residence at Belkuchi upazila in Sirajganj.
Latif, also a former AL Sirajganj district unit president, was arrested at about 2:00pm, said Belkuchi police inspector for investigation Md Abdul Bari.
‘Members of joint forces arrested Latif at his village home. He was interrogated in an army camp and later handed over to police,’ said Sirajganj superintendent of police Md Faruk Hossain.
He said that he was arrested in a case filed over killing 15 police members at the Enayetpur police station on August 4 and the miscreants also set fire to the police station and looted it.
The SP said that Latif was produced before a court in Sirajganj and the court sent him to jail.Â
Latif Biswas elected as a lawmaker to Sirajganj 5 constituency on the AL ticket in 1996 and 2008.
He also held the position of fisheries and livestock minister after 2008.
Latif was defeated from the same constituency in the 2024 general election contesting it as an independent candidate resigning from Zilla Parishad chairman post.
Latif Biswas’ wife Ashanur Biswas, also AL Belkuchi upazila unit general secretary, said that her husband was a senior politician but there was no significant case against him, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Sirajganj reported.
‘My husband has surrendered two licensed arms and ammunition to police stations within stipulated time. My husband is a victim of local political conspiracy,’ she added.
