The International Crimes Tribunal on Sunday ordered detention of Armed Police Battalion constable Md Sujon Hossain in a case concerning crimes against humanity during the student-led mass uprising at Chankharpool in Dhaka on August 5, 2024.
The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, ordered the detention in the case until further order.
The court also directed the chief prosecutor to submit the probe report in the Chankharpool case by February 23, 2025.
On January 1, 2025, the tribunal issued a production warrant to bring Sujan before the court following a petition from the chief prosecutor.
Prosecutor Mizanul Islam alleged that Sujan was responsible for shooting at protesters and bystanders during the unrest, which left seven people dead near Borhanuddin College at Chankharpool.
Witness accounts and video evidence showed Sujan firing at the crowd from various positions, including standing, kneeling, and lying down.
The video of the incident went viral on social media, sparking public outrage.
At the time of his tribunal appearance, Sujan was already detained at Dhaka Central Jail in connection with a separate case filed with the Shahbagh police station.
The tribunal earlier ordered detention of several police officers, including former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, in connection with crimes against humanity across the country during the student-led mass uprising that deposed Sheikh Hasina as prime minister and forced her to resign and flee to India.聽聽聽
Prosecutor Mizanul Islam, assisted by Abdus Sobhan, BM Sultan Mahmud, and Monowar Hossain Tamim, argued before the tribunal that the Chankharpool shooting constituted a deliberate act of violence against civilians, warranting charges of crimes against humanity.
