
A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court placed former National Board of Revenue member Matiur Rahman on three-day remand and sent his wife, former upazila chairman Layla Kaniz, to jail on Wednesday.
Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Naznin Akter passed the order as the聽 Anti-Corruption Commission placed them before the court seeking seven-day remand, said court officials.
Earlier in the morning, a Dhaka Metropolitan Police detective branch team arrested the couple in the capital鈥檚 Bashundhara Residential area.
DMP DB joint commissioner for North Rabiul Islam said that they were arrested at about 8:00am on Wednesday following a request from the ACC.
On January 6, the ACC filed three cases against former NBR member Matiur Rahman and his family members over amassing illegal wealth.
The accused in the three cases, filed on charges of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 79.79 crore, are Matiur, his first wife Layla Kaniz, their daughter Farzana Rahman Ipshita and Matiur鈥檚 son Ahmed Taufiqur Rahman Arnob.
One of the three cases filed on the day accused Matiur and his wife Layla Kaniz of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 13 crore and concealing information of wealth worth Tk 1.53 crore.
Another case accused Matiur and his daughter Farzana Rahman Ipshita of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 53.41 crore and concealing information of wealth worth Tk 2.45 crore.
Matiur was also accused in the third case along with his second wife鈥檚 son Ahmed Taufiqur Rahman Arnob of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 13.38 crore and concealing information of assets worth Tk 42 crore.
Earlier, the commission filed two cases against Matiur Rahman and his second wife Shammi Akhter Shibli on charges of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 11.18 crore.
Matiur was exposed to public scrutiny after video footage went viral on social media showing his second wife鈥檚 son, Ahmed Taufiqur Rahman, buying a goat for Tk 12 lakh ahead of Eid-ul-Azha in June, last year.
Following the incident, Matiur went into early retirement last year amid graft allegations.
On June 4, 2024, the ACC decided to launch an inquiry into corruption allegations against Matiur and his family members.
