A fire that broke out at warehouses in the capital’s Hazaribagh area on Friday was doused after about five hours of effort by 11 firefighting units.
The fire broke out at about 2:00pm at a leather warehouse on the fifth floor of a seven-storey building named Finix Tannery factory located in Hazaribagh’s Tannery Market area, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence.
Station officer of the FSCD’s media cell Talha Bin Zasim said that no casualties were reported in the fire and the cause of the fire could not be known immediately.
The fire originated on the fifth floor and spread to the sixth and seventh floors of the building, FSCD director for operations Lieutenant Colonel Tajul Islam said, adding that the fifth floor was partially burnt while the other two floors were fully gutted.
The building was used to be a tannery factory but the factory moved to another place renting the building, said Shaiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Hazaribagh police station.
‘There were several warehouses of small factories making handicrafts, leather, plastic frames, plastic pots, helmet and footwear on the fifth, sixth and seventh floors of the building,’ he said.
Members of several law enforcement agencies, including police, Border Guard Bangladesh and the army were deployed on the spot, he said, adding that the loss in the fire stood at about Tk 8 to 10 crore.
There was hardly any fire safety plan in the building, FSCD director Tajul said while briefing the media outside the spot.
The officer said that the fire service gave several notices to the building authority about fire safety of the building.
‘It took three hours to bring the fire under control. The capacity of the fire service could not be utilised due to shortage of water, inflammable materials inside, crowd of eager people and narrow roads,’ added the fire official.
