The authorities of the Bangla daily Bhorer Kagoj on Monday announced the closure of its head office at Malibagh in Dhaka amid the protests of its journalists and employees demanding wages and arrear.

In this regard, the authorities hung a notice at the main gate of the daily.

Mentioning the Section 12 of the Labour Act 2006, the notice stated that the authorities decided to keep the daily鈥檚 head office shut as the situation was going beyond the control of the owner.

The journalists of the daily, however, claimed that the authority suspended publication of the newspaper and closed the head office.

Journalists and employees of the daily who have been demanding their dues held a demonstration in front of the office.

On Sunday, journalists and union leaders also staged a rally in front of the daily鈥檚 office, pressing for overdue payments and wage board benefits.

In response, the management halted the newspaper鈥檚 printing, leading to its non-publication on Monday, and hanged a notice of closure of its head office.

Khondaker Kawsar Hossain, chief reporter of Bhorer Kagoj, condemned the decision and stressed that while owners had the right to shut down newspaper, they must ensure employees receive all legal benefits before doing so.

On behalf of the journalist and employees, he also informed that they would hold a press conference at the National Press Club on Tuesday.
