A local leader of Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal, youth front of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, who was detained in an operation by the joint forcers early Friday, died at a hospital in Cumilla in the morning.

The victim Md Touhidul Islam, 40, was convener of Juba Dal Adarsha Sadar Upazila Panchthubi union unit.


He used to work at Chittagong RKU Company Limited and came to his village to attend his father’s kulkhani who died four days ago, family members said.

They alleged that he was tortured brutally.

‘Touhidul died due to inhuman torture. There were several injury marks on his body,’ said Rabiul Islam, cousin of the deceased.

Kotwali police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Mohinul Islam said that they received a phone call from the army at about 11:00am on Friday and asked the police to take Touhidul in custody.

‘When Touhidul was handed over to the police, he was sick. After being taken to the hospital, doctors declared that he was brought dead to the hospital,’ the OC told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

The OC, however, could not confirm the reason of Touhidul’s death and why he was detained.

‘The reason of his death could be known after the autopsy report,’ said the police official.

When contacted, Inter Services Public Relation Directorate said that the army was investigating into the allegations.

The ISPR said that it could not comment on the allegations before the investigation ends.
