The Rapid Action Battalion on Tuesday said that it had arrested Md Anwar who is accused of running drug trades, mugging and extortion for a long time, sometimes involving murders, in the capital’s Mohammadpur and its surrounding areas.

RAB-2 commander additional deputy inspector general Khalidul Haque Howlader at a press briefing Tuesday afternoon said that Anwar, 36, was arrested during an operation at Keraniganj in Dhaka on Monday.

Anwar’s two associates, Md Emon, 20, and Md Farid, 27, were arrested from Adabor in Dhaka on the same day, he said.

‘Anwar admitted that he cut off the wrists of three people, but our investigation showed that he had cut the hands of at least seven people over the past few months,’ he said, without giving an exact time frame of the incidents.

There are multiple cases against Anwar over murder, attempted murder, extortion, arms and narcotics trade, according to a RAB press release issued on Tuesday.

RAB in its press release said that Anwar moved to Dhaka from Bagerhat in search of livelihood in 2005 when he used to transport fresh food and water.

He had entered the world of crime by mugging and extorting at bus stands, but in 2024 he established himself as the ringleader of a ‘wrist cutting group’ by cutting off people’s wrists and spreading video footage of the acts on social media, it said.

A video footage of cutting off someone’s wrist created a lot of furore on social media platforms, the press release said.

Later, law enforcers conducted several drives to nab Anwar when he went into hiding, it added.
