
Three suspected members of left extremist organisation Purba Banglar Communist Party, were shot dead reportedly by armed Jasod Ganabahani near an irrigation canal in the Ramchandrapur area under Sailkupa upazila in Jhenaidah district Friday night.
The victims are suspected PBCP leader Hanif Ali, 56, his brother-in-law Liton Hossain, 38, and Raisul Islam Raju, 28, of Kusthia Sadar upazila, according to the police and local people.
Jhenaidah district additional superintendent of police Imran Zakaria said that the police recovered three bodies, two motorcycles and two helmets from the spot sometimes after 11:30pm on Friday.
‘We received information from local people and journalists that they received a WhatsApp message from a person, who claimed himself to be Kalu and the military chief of Jasod Ganabahani, claiming responsibility for the triple murder,’ he said.
The police official said that the victims received bullets in their heads and necks.
He said that they were investigating the incident and whether any group tried to use the name of Jasod Ganabahani.
The bodies were kept at the Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination, he said and added that no case was filed and none was arrested in this connection.
Imran said that Hanif Ali, an accused in at least 13 cases, was a death row convict and was released on bail.
Local people alleged that Hanif Ali was one of the top leaders of the PBCP in the 90s and was involved in criminal activities in different upazilas in Jhenaidah and Chuadanga districts then.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party Jhenaidah district unit vice-president Enamul Kabir Mukul said that they had been observing the rise of ‘left extremists’ in Jhenaidah for the past month.
