Eminent singer, composer, social activist and freedom fighter Altaf Mahmud’s wife Sara Ara Mahmud died on Sunday evening.

She was 78.


She died at her residence in the Eskaton area in the capital.

In a Facebook post, Altaf Mahmud’s daughter Shawan Mahmud, said, ‘Shaheed Altaf Mahmud’s wife Sara Mahmud has died today at 6.25pm.’

The post also said that she left in the month of language.

A statement, sent to the media by freedom fighter-filmmaker-thespian Nasiruddin Yousuff on the day, read that Sara died at her residence in the Eskaton area.

She left behind her daughter, son-in-law, three brothers and two sisters.

Her namaz-e-janaza will be held at the Nur Nagar Jam E Mosque at Eskaton after zuhr prayers, the statement said, adding that she would be buried at Banani graveyard after janaza.

Altaf Mahmud was abducted on August 30, 1971 by Pakistani occupation forces and had not returned since then.

He had made outstanding contribution to the the Language Movement and the War of Independence.

He composed Amar Bhaiyer Rokte Rangano Ekushey February, which remains a signature song of Language Movement and he was a member of the Crack Platoon during the War of Independence in 1971.
