Dhaka University vice-chancellor professor Niaz Ahmed Khan said on Sunday that those who shaped the country鈥檚 history stood above politics while referring to ASM Abdur Rab鈥檚 first hoisting of the national flag on March 2, 1971.

ASM Abdur Rab鈥檚 contributions to the struggle for independence, and his role in the politics of听Bangladesh afterwards must be recognised, the VC added.


鈥楾hose who build history rise above politics. We invited ASM Abdur Rab personally. Due to his physical weakness, he could not attend the event marking Flag Hoisting Day today,鈥 said the vice-chancellor.

He made the remarks at a programme held at Dhaka University鈥檚 historic Battala to observe Flag Hoisting Day.

The DU authorities this year invited ASM Abdur Rab, the veteran figure who hoisted the country鈥檚 national flag on March 2, 1971.

ASM Abdur Rab expressed his happiness about being invited to celebrate this historic day, he added.

DU vice-chancellor professor Niaz addressed the event as chief guest and professor Mohammad Jahangir Alam Chowdhury as the special guest, while DU pro-vice-chancellor for administration professor Sayema Haque Bidisha presided over the event.

Dean of the Faculty of Arts, professor Siddiqur Rahman Khan, delivered the welcome speech and the event was conducted by registrar Munshi Shams Uddin Ahmed.

On March 2, 1971, then Dhaka University Central Students鈥 Union vice-president ASM Abdur Rob, on behalf of the Swadhin Bangla Chhatra Sangram Parishad, first hoisted the national flag, designed with a golden map of Bangladesh inside a red circle set against a green background, atop the university Arts Building amid tumultuous cheers from the spirited students in a massive gathering.

Jatiya Samjtantrik Dal-JSD had taken programmes to observe the day and central leaders of the party greeted party鈥檚 president ASM Abdur Rob at his Uttara residence.

Earlier the party held a discussion at the National Press Club on Thursday to mark the day.
