A Bangladeshi youth was shot dead by two miscreants in Wepener city of Free State Province in South Africa Thursday evening.
The deceased, Kamrul Islam, 33, from Karmullahpur village at Yeakubpur union of Daganbhuiyan upazila in Feni, was the second of five siblings who had moved to South Africa 12 years ago to earn a livelihood and started his own business after a brief period of employment.
The deceased鈥檚 younger brother, Kamruzzaman, said that two youths attacked Kamrul with the intent to rob him while he was closing his shop at about 9:00pm.
Holding Kamrul at gunpoint, they looted the cash and valuables from the shop, Kamruzzaman said, adding that at one point, suspecting that there was more cash in Kamrul鈥檚 car parked outside, they took him to the vehicle.
During a heated exchange, one of the robbers shot Kamrul in the chest, killing him on the spot, he added.
Kamrul had built a new house at Karmullahpur village and planned to return to Bangladesh in a few months to get married, said his brother, adding that they had lost their father earlier and their mother had been fainting repeatedly upon hearing the news of Kamrul鈥檚 death.
The family sought the Bangladesh embassy鈥檚 help to bring back his body.
Daganbhuiyan upazila nirbahi officer SM Azharul Islam said that the upazila administration was ready to assist in bringing back Kamrul鈥檚 body if his family needed any help in this regard.
