
The authorities of Dhaka University on Saturday declared a one-day holiday today as a mark of honour to death of the university’s former vice-chancellor, professor AAMS Arefin Siddique.
Following the university’s tradition, the decision has been taken showing respect and honour for him, said a university press release issued on Saturday.
No classes or examinations would be held on Sunday in this regard, the release also said.
It added that following the death of a former vice-chancellor and professor, all the usual university practices including miking on campus, publishing condolence messages, and holding special prayers at the central mosque, had been followed to inform everyone about the time and place of the funeral with the consent of the family.
Earlier, criticism sparked on social media as the former DU vice-chancellor’s namaz-e-janaza was not held on the university campus.
Arefin Siddique passed away on Thursday night while undergoing treatment since March 6 following a sudden collapse.
The first namaz-e-janaza of Arefin Siddique was held on Friday at Al Aqsa Mosque participated by Dhaka University vice-chancellor professor Niaz Ahmed Khan and with former and current teachers and students.
Professor Niaz Ahmed said that considering the overall situation and following the family’s decision, the namaz-e-janaza of professor Arefin Siddique took place there.
Arefin Siddique’s brother Saifullah Siddique told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they had heard that the current university authorities would not be able to provide security for the namaz-e-janaza.
Arefin Siddique’s second and third namaz-e-janazas were held at Shahi Eidgah Jame Mosque at Dhanmondi and in the Eidgah field respectively and he was laid to rest in Azimpur graveyard.
Dhaka University’s proctor associate professor Saifuddin Ahmed told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that in July 2020 former vice-chancellor of the university professor Emajuddin Ahmed died.
‘Due to the Covid-19 pandemic at that time, his namaz-e-janaza was not held on the campus and one-day holiday was observed,’ he said, adding, ‘In June 2016 another former vice-chancellor of the university professor Maniruzzaman Miah died and his janaza was held at the university followed by a one-day holiday.’
The university’s Saturday press release added that places of namaz-e-janaza and burial were fixed following the decision of his family and the university administration respected the decision.
Professor Arefin Siddique, a former faculty member of mass communication and journalism department at Dhaka University, was appointed university’s 27th vice-chancellor in 2009 and served till 2017.
