The Indian Border Security Force again attempted to erect a barbed wire fence and iron poles on the zero line along the border at Dahagram under Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat on Monday.
Upon receiving the information, the Border Guard Bangladesh arrived at the spot and protested at the BSF constructing structure along the Sardar Para border at Dahagram in violation of the international law, according to BGB officials and local people.
The BSF later stopped the construction work, the BGB officials said.
The Indian border security force had earlier tried to erect a barbed wire fence along the same border on March 2 and January 10, escalating tension in the surrounding areas.
Local people said that Monday morning the fence was being constructed with the help of members of the Arun Camp of the 6th Battalion of the BSF in West Bengal of India.
The local people informed the BGB about the matter and the BGB went to the spot and protested at the BSF attempt to construct the fence.
At one stage, the BSF stopped the work, according to the BGB.
Subedar Lutfar Rahman, commander of Panbari Company of BGB Rangpur 51 Battalion, said, ‘We protested at this incident and asked them to stop work. They stopped work. The situation is calm. BGB patrols and surveillance are continuing on the border.’
Sirajul Islam, a resident of the area, said, ‘Indian BSF comes to the zero line every few days and tries to build a barbed wire fence. The residents in the bordering areas are always in fear because of this. We are afraid of going to our own land.’
Patgram police officer-in-charge Ashrafuzzaman Sarkar said that an officer had been sent to the scene after hearing about the incident.
‘We will get details when he would return,’ the OC added.
Regarding the matter, Lieutenant Colonel Selim Al Deen, director of the 51 BGB, said that the BSF had stopped the border construction work in the face of the BGB protest.
