Dhaka University has primarily expelled 128 students for their involvement in attacks on protesters during the student-led mass uprising from July 15 to August 5.

Based on the report of the fact-finding committee formed to investigate the violent attacks, the university administration reached the decision on Monday at its Syndicate meeting.

The expelled students are reportedly affiliated with the banned student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of Awami League.

However, their names and identities could not be immediately confirmed.

Regarding the decision, Dhaka University proctor Saifuddin Ahmed told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·, ‘At a Syndicate meeting held today the decision was reached to primarily expel 128 students.’

He further added that the university formed another committee headed by Syndicate member Professor Tajmeri SA Islam and the final decision regarding the matter would be made based on the committee’s report.

When asked about the involvement of teachers, he said that a separate committee was investigating their involvement in the attacks. Further actions will be taken once their report was received.

Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology has also expelled 19 students on similar ground citing breach of discipline, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in Chattogram reported.

All of the expelled students were leaders of the CUET’s banned Bangladesh Chhatra League unit.

The decision was made at the 281st emergency meeting of the university’s disciplinary committee.

The university authorities announced the decision through 21 separate notifications issued Monday, signed by Md Mahbubul Alam, the director of the Student Welfare Department and secretary of the disciplinary committee.

According to the notifications, on its March 11 disciplinary committee meeting a decision was reached to impose punishment based on written complaints against the students and their responses to show-cause notices issued earlier.

Among the expelled students, seven have already been suspended from academic activities for different durations and permanently removed from residential halls. Additionally, 12 other students have been suspended from their dormitories.

The student-led uprising forced the ouster of the authoritarian regime of Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024.
